This week I continued working on my jersey project. I started off the week by using wood glue to put my frame together. The dowels worked well, but in order to make sure everything is as stable as possible I used glue. After drying over night, it seemed to stay together fine but I noticed that the top and bottom pieces which I sanded last week still looked a little crooked, so I enlisted Cormac to help me sand it more. Once I was satisfied with that, I had to figure out a solution to fill in a few cracks in my wood. I went to Carpentry with Joao "Big John" Luiz and asked about solutions to this new problem. They said they didn't have a direct solution, but the teacher suggested that I use a wood filler such as Bondo or DryDex. I was able to find some in the shop, and I applied it to my frame.
After a day of drying, the cracks were filled however you could still see the wood filler. To cover it up I wanted to use dark wood stain, but I was informed that you would still be able to see it. Someone suggested that I just paint it black, but I'm not sure that I would want to do that because I still want that wood look. I was going to test both stain and paint on a scarp piece of wood, but we have neither of those things so I couldn't. In the meantime, I started setting up the cover (the other side of the frame) in VCarve with Milo. I imported everything and set the cut depths, but we were having some trouble adding the extra 0.35 inches on each side in order to fit the dowels. Tomorrow I want to fix that and start routing.
