Week of 2/26/24

Updated: Feb 29

This week I had to figure out the solutions I was having to the problem I was having before February Break, which was that the dowels don't match up on either piece. I had the same problem on the frame side which I thought was just something wrong in VCarve and I sanded it down, however the same problem happened this time which means it was probably the jigs considering I used the same ones. I did some research and discovered butt joints, which is when you put two pieces of wood together at a 90 degree angle with wood glue, let it dry overnight, then use nails for extra support.

The second problem I needed to address was the pain vs. stain situation. I would just use stain, but I used a wood filler on some cracks on the frame side and stain, every the darkest one, doesn't completely hide it. The solution would be to just use normal old black paint, however this would hide the wood look and make it loom like a solid black. I did some research and found that high gloss paint will still allow the wood to show through a little bit, as well as give it the shine that stain would. Once I had some free time, I headed over to a hardware store and purchased 3 inch nails to hold the cover together as well as a quart of some high gloss Benjamin Moore black paint.

The next day, I was going to glue but still had one issue. Since I had already drilled holes for dowels the prior week, the nails would be going into these holes and not the wood of the frame itself, defeating the whole purpose of the nails. My dear friend Milo Austin suggested that I place the dowels in the holes then sand them down to replace the drilled wood, which I did on all the pieces that needed it. After that, I started gluing the first side together with a T bracket to make sure it was as straight as possible. Once they had dried over night, Milo showed me how to use finisher nails and helped me hammer them in. I then repeated the same gluing process that I used the day before, and tomorrow once it's dry I can nail it all together. By the end of this week everything should be glued together, which means next week I can finally start paining the frame and put on the finishing touches.
